That is when our founder's great-grandfather, John Edward Howe, rode with Teddy Roosevelt and the Rough Riders in the Oklahoma Territory. As part of his responsibilities, John Edward took care of Teddy's horses, keeping them sound and healthy. Using botanicals, herbs and natural remedies for equine health, John Edward passed the tradition on to future generations. His son, Oscar, depended on his training skills to feed his family during the Great Depression. John Edward's grandson "J.C." started out as a jockey at fairs at age 11 and had two memorable contracts: Bootsy Hernandez in 1935 and Harry Trotseck in 1936. J.C. rode in Cuba and in the last race meet at Texas's Arlington Downs in 1937. Pari-mutuel racing would be lost to Texas for over 50 years. He had transitioned into a horse owner and trainer by 1942, a career that lasted 48 years. His training philosophy was "horses are like children…trainers need to be content with what they get—mold them and treat them equally". Sometimes J.C. trained as many as 24 horses at a time. Over the years he had trained over 500 winners. Jockey agent Oscar Sanchez noted, "He was very good with fillies. He knew his medicine and how to work on horse's legs to keep them cool, tight and sound." In 1973, John R. Howe became the fourth horseman in the family to earn his trainers license and proudly worked race tracks in the Midwest, Florida and Arkansas alongside his father and grandfather. John Edward, Oscar and J.C. would use secret family formulas to keep their race horses and pleasure horses sound. J.C. helped his son, John R. the founder of Finish Line ® , with insight to product development and formulation. The Howe family formulas were effective, John R. visited race barns every morning to sell his made from-scratch poultices and tie-up remedies.
