Charlie Whittingham
was a Hall of Fame Thoroughbred Race trainer with 3
Eclipse Awards Outstanding Trainer in 1971, 1982, and
1989. He was also seven time U.S. Champion Trainer
in earnings in 1970, 1971, 1972, 1973, 1975, 1981 and
1982. Charlie had horses win the Kentucky Derby and
Preakness Stakes. His horses also placed or showed in
the Kentucky Derby, Preakness and Belmont Stakes.
Charlie also won two Breeders Cup Classics with
Sunday Silence (1989) and Ferdinand (1987).
Angel Penna, Sr
was a Hall of Fame Thoroughbred Race Trainer from
Argentina. Angel won over 250 graded stake races.
In France he won the Prix de l' Arc Triomphe in 1972
and 1974. He received leading trainer honors in
Argentina, Venezuela and France. He was inducted
into the United States Hall of Fame.
Laz Barrera
was a Hall of Fame Thoroughbred Race Trainer from
Cuba. Lazaro was Eclipse Award Outstanding Trainer
four years in a row from 1976-1979. He had the
distinction of being the only trainer elected in the
racing Hall of Fame in three countries- Cuba, Mexico
and United States. In 1978 Laz trained Affirmed to win
the Triple Crown a feat that would not be repeated
for 37 years.
Woodford "Woody" Stephens
was a Hall of Fame Thoroughbred Race Trainer and
1983 Eclipse Award Outstanding Trainer. Woody was a
legendary trainer who ran horses in the Kentucky Derby
(1st 1984 Swale), Preakness Stake, and won five Belmont
Stakes in a row with 1982- Believe It, 1983- Caveat,
1984- Swale, 1985- Creme Fraiche, and 1986- Danzig
Connection. Woody also sent five fillies to the winners
circle in the Kentucky Oaks.
